Through All Seasons is a conceptual Toyota poster design that tells the story of travelling seamlessly through the four seasons to promote reliability and durability of the Scion XD. Many different stock images were used to create each of the seasonal elements. To create interest, each season was carefully blended together with an arrangement of detailed objects. The vibrancy of colors was also exaggerated to create a dreamy sense of adventure.
One of the challenges with a project as stock image intensive as this was finding images taken at the right angle. Each image was first pasted onto the canvas then masked and arranged to test if it fit the concept. Hundreds of images had to be searched and tested. The most difficult part of this process was figuring out which images are a feature and which are blending images. In the end many were utilized to express each season, but an in-between season had to be also created to allow a natural flow.
After selecting the stock images the next step in the process was to carefully mask and adjust in order to give a consistent look.
The use of high pass filtering and color overlays were used to sharpen and manipulate the light source of each image. Afterwards, shadows and highlights were adjusted to create a consistent light source and give each image a strong sense of depth.
In order to create the right landscape, multiple images had to be blended together to create one object. The hill was a combination of various different grass elements.
Each grass landscape was first masked, then color adjusted. Each patch of grass was arranged randomly to give the hill a realistic and natural look. The blades of grass that were closer to the viewer were longer than the blades further away to give the hill a three dimensional look.
Once each of the seasonal elements were constructed, the next step was to blend them together. Sometimes further adjustments had to be made to ensure the blend happened naturally and seamlessly.
Because each block of elements were constructed non-desctructively with many stock images, file handling and performance became an issue. At the time of this project Photoshop did not have the linked smart object feature therefore, each element had to be separated into its own .psb file then flattened before export.
After the base core elements were blended together the last and final step was to apply color adjustments to each season to further enhance and exagerate the season it represents.
Blowing leaves and snow were also added to create a sense of movement and liveliness. This helped to add the extra bit of detail to make this artwork interesting and beautiful.
